I would be interested to hear Doug's opinion of the "Watchmen "score by Tyler Bates and how he views his music ( "300", "The day the world Ended " etc ). Is he worth checking out ?

I ain't Doug, but I loved his cover of Roy Budd's "Get Carter" theme for the Sylvester Stallone remake. Some good stuff on the score CD too that's worlds away from the original, but still pretty keen.

Before sitting down to watch 300, my son cautioned me that I was going to be watching a guy flick, not a historical film. Lots of testosterone. Fair enough. I had a passing interest in the application of Canadian graphic artistry in the film and was curious about Tyler Bates. I concluded he is very much a postmodern pop composer - lots of sampling, including Elliot Goldenthal in 300. His score was more cacaphonous than symphonic. Tomorrow I have been invited to an IMAX showing of WATCHMEN by a couple of young folk two generations my junior. Curious about what I had committed to, I did check the trailer on-line. If the music included in the trailer is Tyler Bates, I am not encouraged by the sonic assault I will be enduring. But I know I will enjoy the company and pre-movie lunch.

Watchmen aren´t perfect score but there are some tracks which I really like.
The best track is Edward Blake - The Comedian. The combination of synths, electronic and guitar is perfect. I like the "solo" played by some kind of synth instrument and after first 40sec. that it takes electric guitar in some kind of "pink floyd" sound or what is it. I can´t describe it well.
I really can´t remember when I heard something like this last time.
Also like You quit! and I love you Mom and some others. These three track´s aren´t orchestral but they have perfect atmosphere, melody and structure.

I like his Get Carter score, but my really favorite music composed by him is his jazzy score to film Last time I comitted suicide. It is composed for guitar, piano, drums, bass and there is also trumpet. Sometimes the score goes wild but mostly it is pleasure to listen this.
And i must mentioned his funky groovy main theme from Mario Van Peebles film Badassss. It is old school funk track something like Cleopatra Jones by J.J. Johnson.
