Last couple years if someone wasn't BLOWN AWAY by the whole list of releases we got and still get pages of posts from people declaring that Varese sucks, that they're an Evil Empire out to make MONEY (gasp! horror!), or at the very least how disappointed they are that there isn't something for THEM.
There's a sense that some feel that Varese reneged on some kind of deal. If the Varese Club was some kind of subscriber arrangement and people were automatically pre-paying and receiving stuff they didn't want I'd understand but it's more like they walked into a record shop, looked around for a bit, didn't find anything they wanted to buy, and then screamed at the owner of the shop for an hour demanding a refund of the gas money they spent driving to the shop as well as recompense for the time wasted browsing. Or am I out of touch and people actually behave this way? Sure, I can imagine a couple people I've encountered on the internet carrying on like this in the flesh but surely this can't be what we're reduced to?
Where did this childish sense of entitlement come from? And it's not just "the kids" whinging in this manner either. I find myself admiring those who manage to post that they're not interested in any of the club titles without reverting to hyperbolic vitriol. End quote

Thanks kipling71. Pretty much sums up my own sentiments. I was
impressed with the variety of the latest "Club" releases, and bought all five. It's great to see The Tall Men finally see the light of day. I can cross this off my ever-changing list of unreleased Western scores, and its always nice to see Victor Young get a bit of attention. And I am really looking forward to the North By Northwest re-recording. One of my favorite Herrmann scores (and my favorite Hitchcock film). It's interesting to note that, while waiting for Varese to post the new offerings at midnight
Pacific time, I was watching NBNW on TCM.....coincidence or clever timing on the part of Varese? Can't wait to listen to this one. I was kind of hoping for the Conti to be The Right Stuff, but Neighbors sounds interesting, and in due time somebody will release TRS. It's like a future present under the tree. I think anything that has been tweaked by Korngold promises to be an interesting listen, and the Bernstein title will help this Bernstein completist get a bit closer to his (probably never-ending) goal.
It's always a tremendous occasion when something like Alien
is given the deluxe treatment, and we are so very lucky to see this title at last; but it's also equally gratifying to see things like The Revolt Of Mamie Stover, Metalstorm, Throw Momma From The Train, The Enemy Below, Marie Ward, Fitzwilly, The Racers,The Prodigal, Broken Lance, The Wrong Man and tens of dozens of others. Not all of them are diamonds like "Alien" or "The Great Escape", but to those of us who truly enjoy film music, they are all gems. And very much appreciated, at that.
