INTRADA Announces:

GATOR
Composed and Conducted by CHARLES BERNSTEIN
INTRADA Special Collection Volume 149

For the 1976 sequel to White Lightning -- simply called Gator after Burt Reynolds' character -- composer Charles Bernstein needed to come up with a more urbane approach to scoring, without losing the musical attitude that helped make the first film so popular. With the film's change of locale from the country to the urban setting of Dunston, Bernstein moved away from the banjo-picking car chase kind of sound to grittier action music. All the banjo, harmonica and whistling had all but been left back in the Okefenokee in favor of jazz strut and electric guitar funk found notably in Gator’s main theme. Bernstein’s new theme for McKlusky portrays Gator as a charismatic hero to be reckoned with. There's a love interest this time around as well, giving Bernstein the opportunity to write some sensitive, romantic tunes.

The plot of Gator finds McKlusky up to his old swampland tricks with grandfather and daughter in tow. All it takes is one motorboat pursuit for the law to press Gator into turning reluctant informant against his old criminal pals. This time it’s childhood friend Bama McCall (Jerry Reed),whose extortion and prostitution racket has turned him into a virtual Godfather of Dunston County. Confronted with the harsh facts of his friend’s corruption, McKlusky unreservedly vows to bring down Bama—with the help of intrepid television reporter Aggie Maybank (Lauren Hutton), the G-man Irving Greenfield (Jack Weston) who “sticks out in Dunston like a bagel in a bucket of grits,” and the cat-obsessed public crusader Emmeline Cavanaugh (Alice Ghostley).

This Intrada Signature Edition is limited to 1000 units.

Hey, Roger - I know that these press release threads were delayed - hopefully it wasn't something personal that caused the delay, no?

Hope everything is well and okay out there... all the best, from Canada.

Great releases, as well!

Edit: Just for clarification - this press release states that Gator is limited to 1000, but on the website it says 1200. Which one is it?

Thanks for the Bernstein, his scores get better and better with every Intrada release.

Love that sound clip nr: 2 "For A Little While".

Hope you will follow this release with my favourite Bernstein score, you know the one with the vampire.
I know that movie by heart, and it's got 4 or 5 real power themes.
Can't wait....

Lets all sing along now:
He was raised in the swamp
In the back of a slough
He grew up eatin' rattlesnake meat
And drinkin' homemade brew
Now folks here about call him Gator
And everybody knows him well
Meanest man ever to hit the swamp
Folks swear he come straight outta hell

Well Gator McKlusky sittin' on a stump
Hammer pulled back on a twelve gauge pump
Watchin' that swamp lookin' out for the law
While he make the best corn liquor you ever saw

(Rock gut whiskey...)

While he's makin' that mash he watches and he looks
Old Gator he knows that swamp like a book
Somethin' out there movin' Gator whaddaya see
Ain't nothin' but the snakes and the gators and me

Everything's okey-dokey in the Okefenokee
That sheriff ain't snoopin' around
So cook that moonshine down
'Til it's good and clear
Everything's okey-dokey in the Okefenokee
That sheriff he'd soon mess around with the devil
Than to get his self long messin' around in here

One day he was cookin' some mash he was almost done
When they spotted the law and they had to run
So he headed for the swamp and they followed him in
But the law might as well been a-chasin' the wind

(Look out for that snake, sheriff...)

Well they chased on back through the muck and the slime
To the back of that swamp where the sun don't shine
But the law won't never catch Gator my friend
'Cause he knows that swamp like the back of his hand

Watch out boys old smokey's in the Okefenokee
The sheriff's out there snoopin' around
So shut that business down
And let's disappear
Look out boys old smokey's in the Okefenokee
But that sheriff he's really gonna catch the devil
If he keeps on snoopin' around in here

(Gator's in the swamp, sheriff...)
(Go get him...)
(If you can...)

(Careful, sheriff...)
(Don't let that gator bite you on your gonads...)

CocyNoky is doing his okyfanoky dancing jigg and making fine homemade brew...Toss that LP away going intrada style with a fantastic release...one more Bernstein down and one too go...

thanks Doug and Roger for releasing this on CD for us

Is this the first time Intrada's heading has been repositioned from its typical centering on the artwork? Interesting.

One rumor has been that a complete CONAN THE BARBARIAN in stereo isn't possible. Another is that stereo PSYCHO tracks no longer exist.

We'd be here 'til doomsday trying to pinpoint a particular rumor (title) in a context of so many that could apply. I will not even give it a shot.

Appearently many of the masters from early Herrmann works are simply gone. A story relayed at FSM was that "Vertigo" -- last time they tried to do a new CD -- is master tapes only got one pass before they fell to pieces (sadly, I guess that means no future remaster/complete CD of this classic score).

The tapes, last I read, for "Psycho" are gone, too. Was was left, were music stems of the score (I forget what they are used for, at the moment). It's was the poor sounding bootleg was sourced from. One can only hope that with todays mastering software and the knowledge gained from working on other titles, Lukas or Roger could do wonders with that. Unless of course alternative tapes have turned up. Or McNeely does a re-recording for Varese Club.
