I saw this posted on Soundtrack.net. Morricone is to get the honorary Oscar this year. I am so pleased to hear this. Is this the first time a film composer has gotten the honorary award? Justin |

Ouch. Excepting Herbie Hancock (that really was a bizarre and rarified bestowal of honors), every composer mentioned as somehow unworthy of their Oscar win contributed something rather special to the medium, if not in terms of longevity than at least as it applies to their particular era's cultural zeitgeist. Gore's "Fame" score and Lai's "Love Story," for example, are deservedly iconic, and while arguments for the competition can be easily posited (Corigliano, Goldsmith and Williams, among others, were certainly equally as deserving), I nonetheless wouldn't suggest that the gold was wrested from its most worthy recipient. |

Yes. Menken does terrific stuff. And I'd certainly champion at least one of those Oscars. Ironically, my favorite score of his (HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME) didn't get the nod. Anyway, an Oscar for him seems fair. But two, three, whatever? And none for Morricone? I've got my issues with that. --Doug[/quote] I do too.
