It's always horrible to hear things like that. To most people I'm sure it wouldn't mean anything but to some it does mean something. Most documentation of the past is very important in some ways as far as I'm concerned.
Read somewhere that in the 1920's, boats were loaded with film to be dumped into Santa Monica bay. This happened on a regular basis in order to make room to store the new films which were eventually dumped into Santa Monica bay as well.
