The cue I missed most was the haunting music at the start of The Great Escape, when they first arrive at the camp. I remember I kept playing the LP thinking it must be here somewhere. Happily that was put right when Varese released the two-disc original score. |

The experience of seeing THE COOK, THE THIEF, HIS WIFE & HER LOVER was easily as much about the music as it was about any other single element. Michael Nyman's music really defines this utterly unique film. One of my favorite features of the score was the two-note French horn motif that accompanies the lovemaking sessions between the wife and the lover. And yet, when I purchased the soundtrack, I was horrified to find that the piece wasn't included. I was just utterly flummoxed and somewhat upset. It wasn't until years later, as I was completing my Nyman library that I purchased DROWNING BY NUMBERS, and was greeted with the track called "Fish Beach," the very French horn-based cue that had been later used in COOK/THIEF. So all's well that ends well, but boy did I feel let down! This was all in 1989, pre-Internet, so I could immediately run to the computer and Google "nyman cook thief french horn" and have my immediately gratifying answer! |
