Good catch about this on your 8/25 column Doug - I got this one the other day and have been
playing it 'mucho'.
I don't like hyperbolic statements, but on 2nd listen, I swear
this is the most authentic sounding re-recording I've heard - it does NOT sound
like a recent recording, it really escaped from the original sessions - I cannot
believe how spot on Raine's reading is, not just of the score, but of Jarre's music
in general. Amazing record, highly recommended!!!!!! Keep 'em coming boys!!!

My sentiments exactly. About ten minutes into it I reminded myself that Jarre was no longer with us when this album was recorded. It's not just that the album is really well recorded... it's also that it sounds like Jarre! And sounding like Jarre is a good thing! He's missed. James brought him back.

The recording of Villa Rides! follows up Lawrence of Arabia, which is similarly re-creates the feel of a performance conducted by Maurice Jarre himself. I'd owned every iteration of Lawrence before the Tadlow recording, now the only version I ever listen to other than the Tadlow is Walt Dickerson's jazz adaptation. I think Nic Raine has a particular feel for Jarre's music and handles the composer's self professed "harmonic perversions" with great panache.

Actually I wanted to ask you guys about your opinion on the Tadlow Lawrence. So thanks Swashbuckler for your posting. Just put that release on my wish list. Probably Villa Rides! will follow - according to this thread and the samples from the Tadlow site ...

I'll add kudos to Tadlow LAWRENCE as well, it's the only one I'm playing hereforward,
and again, I think the acoustic and overall feel (not to mention being complete and a
very good extra disc of goodies) almost betters the film tracks.

There is just something about VILLA though that is uncanny in its recording! I hope that,
at the least, all the bravos for James and the Tadlow gang, help, since this series isn't
doing much financial wise for them......
