Will 2009 be the year of Michael Giacchino, with 3 blockbusters coming out and a 4th volume of the acclaimed series Lost ? A trek to the stars, lost on the land or on an island, Michael Giacchino doesn't seem to stop going... Up !

Looking forward to Up and Land Of The Lost! Star Trek sounds excellent from what I heard in the clips.

Chicago Tribune film critic Michael Phillips mentioned Giacchino's score for "Up" in his blog, : "Michael Giacchino’s score equals his work on “Ratatouille", which means he’s now officially the finest film composer of his generation."

Over at IMDb today saturday the 16 at their daily poll they have the question: "Which of these should J.J. Abrams reboot after Star Trek?" And some of the options where these: Star Wars, Superman, Speed, True Lies, Back to the Future plus a few more.

When I voted I thought "which of these ones would I love to hear a new Giacchino score to?"

And my vote went to True Lies since Giacchino did so well with Mission Impossible 3 so why not?

Maybe I should tell you that I have not seen the new Star Trek or not even heard a single note from it. If I had maybe I had voted differently.

Regarding the score for Star Trek:

This is by no means a comment on its quality, just to be clear.

If not for the final two cues, which really form one cue (the first being a 26-second Alexander Courage Fanfare introduction to the last cue, alternating between Courage's Original Series title theme and Giacchino's own themes) you wouldn't know you were listening to a quote "Star Trek" score. It doesn't have that Trek-like sound the other scores in the film series did (excepting Voyage Home, of course) and is therefore very different.

I don't clearly see how you would define a "Star Trek" sound, but Giacchino's score is totally new and doesn't try to emulate Goldsmith or Horner in any way, which was the right thing to do I think. It's just pure brillant Giacchino, in my humble opinion.
