I've always been fond of Robert Aldrich's Kiss Me Deadly, a little 1955 jewel that probably had every PTA in the country howling their heads off. It was quite violent and brutal in it's day with an ending that just stunned me the first time I saw it. Frank DeVol wrote a pretty unconvential score for it, very simple , small orchestra and it was very effective. I'll add that Ralph Meeker was the best Mike Hammer I've ever seen on the screen. Nat King Cole sang the main title song that appears later in an all black nightclub sung by a torch singer. Moody film! |

One of my all time favorite movies is a crime drama (and, in fact, both words, "crime" and "drama", apply here equally) and a special take on the classic film noir: Roman Polanski's Chinatown. Chinatown may well be the best movie Jerry Goldsmith has ever scored, the best movie Roman Polanski has ever directed, and the best script Robert Towne has ever written, not to mention that it trumps with a superb Jack Nicholson in a subtle and elegantly understated performance (yes, he can do those, too). Chinatown is as perfect as movies come; a genuine, classic Hollywood masterpiece. |
