That's right, the music started playing and then the donkeys started flying; what scores have literally blown your asses out of the water, with STAR WARS like proportions?

I site STAR WARS here, as it was the first score that ever knocked me on my rear, as it offered up the rare experience where a piece of music truly gripped my imagination and rode off with me and I've never been seen again, since, without my eyeballs bulging out'a my skull. A bit dramatic, but I think that most of you may get my point. We love music, yes, but its very seldom, for me at least, when we encounter a piece of music that truly stands out as being more than spectacular, like STAR WARS was the first time that most of us heard it. I'm talking about those scant scores that made you perk up and go "Wow, who's this guy?"

I've already mentioned STAR WARS, but here's a few others that got my ear drums salivating.

• THE LIGHTHORSEMEN (1987) - Mario Millo - Propulsive, stirring and thematically exciting, this was definitely a rare occasion for me to be struck by an incredible piece of music, but, sadly, composer Millo has never risen up to the same bar that he set back in 1987.

• STAR GATE - (1994) - David Arnold - Another exciting debut score AND he even stayed around to give us more.

• THE ISLAND OF LOST SOULS (2007) - Jane Cornish - Rousing adventure music, by a girl, even, and one of the few powerhouse scores to come out this century. Lets hope that she get another shot at writing music on this epic level again soon.

Okay, that's just a few to get the ball rolling, so lets hear what else you guys have.

Thanks,

~ Oz

As you guys problebly allready know...
I'm a sucker for the "larger than life" approach in the action scores department, the more heroic and big the better.

My number one favourite is Francesco De Masis score to the 1983 spaghetti/western tribute actioneer LONE WOLF McQUADE.
De Masi's score plays tribute to all those golden Morricone scores (Once Upon A Time In The West + The Dollar Trilogy) and adds a 80's touch as well.

Other cadidates is:

Alan Silvestri's THE DELTA FORCE (I'm in heaven every time the Theme kicks in.)
(I would also credit this score as One of those that made me listen to film music in the first place.)

Vince DiCola's ROCKY IV (Training Montage, Up The Mountain + War.... Oooohhhh Mama!!!!! )

Anthony Marinelli & Brian Banks YOUNG GUNS (Man that's what I call a Main Title theme)

Alan Silvestri's BACK TO THE FUTURE (especially the It's Been Educational / Clocktower bit.)

Jerry Goldsmith's RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD Part II (The Snake, Escape from Torture, Village Raid etc.)

Hans Zimmer's DAYS OF THUNDER (Another favourite Main Title theme.)

Hans Zimmer's BACKDRAFT (Love this score from beginning to end)

and ofcource Howard Shore's AN INNOCENT MAN (The day I can hear those "Finale Action" cues on CD I can die a happy man.) :D
