i like the rerecording too, and it will be always a good companion to the OST

and as far as i remember, it was my first intrada cd

some 23 years ago

To complain of two separate, fine representations of Goldsmith's work (as some have done here and there -- mostly there) makes little-to-no sense to me. I say, "both deserve equal celebration for unrelated reasoning." For that alone, both are worth acquiring if you're a solidarity fan of film composition which often -- on CD and/or LP -- bears such wide array of restorative color, presented by the best intentions of its publishers. In this instance, I just love to be able to experience something so prized in Goldsmith's catalog (even by the maestro himself) as interpreted by different opportunities of whatever lies for the producer(s) at the time.

The Intrada recording of Islands in the Stream was my very first CD, bought in 1987. That recording was a dream come true back then, when most soundtrack CDs were pop/rock releases, heavily abbreviated, or even non-existent. Out of nowhere came a crisp and clean digital recording of a great Goldsmith score from a decade earlier that had not seen any soundtrack release ever. That was reason for me back then to finally make the switch from LP to CD. And it gave me a sense that, somewhere out there, there are more people who cherish that kind of music. It was a film score release that wasn't a movie tie in or promotional material; it was made for people who just liked the music. And that very CD is in my CD player right now as I am writing this, and I will always cherish this recording. (Which will not prevent me from listening to the original recording as well.)
