Yeah, everything here is so right ! People don't know anymore what is sound quality. How many times have I heard a compressed tune telling to a friend that it sucks, and being responded "really ? I don't hear the difference !". Of course, they spend all their time listening to highly compressed music on youtube ! The human ear has regressed, sadly. Now that Varèse is putting compressed files on their CDs and that Disney Records only sell the Academy Award Winner "Up" in mp3, these are sad times for us audiophile listeners ! |

I can hear a difference in mp3 encodes, to the point of knowing that depending on the program you're using to convert your CDs, 320kbps may not actually ensure top quality. Sometimes a 192 kbps mp3 can sound even better. I loathe compression artifacts. I can even hear them on some DVD audio tracks, and it's frustrating because I prefer "aggressive", more immersive surround mixes and the rears are the first thing to suffer compression issues if the Dolby Digital track isn't well-encoded. I have no problem with compressed music if its done right, and it's pretty much a crapshoot every time. Thank goodness for Blu-ray.... |

I get the impression that sitting listening to music, getting lost in it & not doing anything else like reading is a rare thing these days. I don't do it every day, but nearly every day. I put my big headphones on (I don't see why anyone else should be inconvenienced) lie back & enjoy, it's what music should be, pure pleasure. I don't use my ipod as much as I did, becouse when you're doing other stuff, the music is playing, but you sort of forget it, & it's just a noise. You ask anyone about listening to music & no one has the time these days, I don't know what they're all doing, they seem to have plenty of time to watch TV. |

How ironic - or sad, actually - to recognize the following: The entire movie entertainment industry is pushing to bring their films into the digital era with home video now moving to HD everywhere. One must admit the industry is continually trying to improve the home viewing experience and for the most part it is succeeding. Movies at home are now truly better than ever. Yet in audio, where we went through ancient 78s and into LPs and finally into CDs... the industry is now heading the other way with lower fidelity audio becoming the best they want to offer! Arrggghhhh!!! --Doug |
