Post subject: | Singular Soundtrack's 'Santa Clause: The Movie' Release |
Just recieved Henry Mancini's limited edition release of 'Santa Claus: The Movie' soundtrack this morning and popped it in the drive and had a listen. Upon further inspection, it turns out the tracks are lossy. Anyone know the source of the CD (tapes, vinyl, etc). Spectral view of Track 3: Spectral view of Track 3 (zoomed): -------------------------------------------------------------- EDIT: I've just had an audio specialist confirm that the disc is mastered using low-bitrate lossy encoding, shame ![]() |

Quality control and caring enough to make sure you get out a product that's not being sold as a download ... don't think that's too much to ask for, or makes us "spoiled". Anyway, the label head says there are about 50 left, so that should free up the rights to any label who wants to do a compelte, remeastered (and none lossless) release. |

It's disappointing news for sure, but it doesn't appear to be Singular Soundtrack's fault so much as EMI Music Spain. Apparently EMI sent the music files to Singular Soundtrack via FTP, but before doing so they compressed the files down to mp3 first. It may or may not be the full story (I'm merely going by what the head of the label has said on the FSM board), but I'm willing to believe EMI's mistake. |

More than likely, whichever EMI functionary tasked with delivering the files to Singular saw the uncompressed file size, looked at his watch, and figured why not save time and compress them - not realizing that these were to be mastering elements and that compression was very much less than desirable. If Singular had questioned it, they would've gone through their contact and not the dude who sent the files. As far as the contact was concerned, what they had they sent. More often than not, that's how these things occur in this day and age when everything's done on a desktop computer. I have no insider knowledge of this incident, of course - I'm just spitballing based on stuff I've had to deal with. |
