I read it here first. And I still feel it. I really don't remember whether my love of deserts (and of desert movies) preceded LAWRENCE OF ARABIA or was created by it. However, my parents brought me to see LAWRENCE when I was eight years old -- before I took note composers' (or anybody else's) screen credit, but long after I had begun responding to film music. Age eight was old enough for me to feel the grip of that score's blend of stirring grandeur with the poignancy and mystery of the main theme's bridge, which has haunted me for more than 45 years. DOCTOR ZHIVAGO, THE PROFESSIONALS, THE DAMNED, SHOGUN. I'm not sure offhand whether there's been a Jarre score I've loved since MAD MAX BEYOND THUNDERDOME; but since I rate artists by their peaks and not on a curve, the gap doesn't matter to me. There are many great works but now definitely less greatness left in the world. Adieu, Monsieur Jarre. |

Agreed, a wonderful composer and a great gentleman. I was fortunate enough to interview him twice -- first for FSM in 2003, and later when I did the Grand Prix liner notes just last summer. On both occasions he was jovial, charming and very generous with his time. He will be greatly missed.
