Thomas Newman's score to LITTLE CHILDREN is typically fine. But as is also typical with him, the musical ideas tend to come and go. That is, until the final "End Titles" cue plays over the credits, when he pulls together an absolutely stunning near-eight-minute mini-masterpiece. It's got something of an epilogue quality to it, and is one of the relatively few cases of his writing a sustained, developed piece as opposed to fascinating snippets. I wish he would do things like this more often. It really caps off the film wonderfully and its obsessive, repetitive nature sticks in your head long afterwards. Very effective. This is also the piece that I play for Thom Newman skeptics. |
