Thomas Newman had a lot of "one-track wonders" back in the eighties and nineties. Ditto Newton Howard, Silvestri, Zimmer, Revell and others. Here's one reason why. In many cases the deals with studios and artists guaranteed that any soundtrack album had to devote at least 10% of the running time to the composer of the score. No less... and usually no more. Hence so many 30-40 minute soundtracks with one or two score tracks totaling about 3-4 minutes. By the way, many people mention FRIGHT NIGHT. Great score. Cool songs. But be aware, because of licensing restrictions, the two can never really meet. A song album can't incorporate any score tracks and a score album can't incorporate any of the songs. --Doug |
