And yet . . . we might take heart that occasionally some lost things do turn up finally--witness the current interest in what Doug has recently apparently unearthed--THE DEVIL'S BRIGADE or whatever.

I still harbor hopes that perhaps stuff like THE SATAN BUG might turn up with the Goldsmith estate, or Joel (remember THE TWILIGHT'S LAST GLEAMING), . . . or whatever.

Joel Goldsmith's excellent score to Joshua Tree. :(

This is a bootleg of "The Fearless Vampire Killers", I beliee, in mono, so there has to be something for it.

I thought I recalled reading, back during the Goldsmith BOX, that "Damnation Alley" had some masters, or some were found, but there were still missing elements for the synth elements, or something like that.
I say have Joel redue the synths, and get this score out before it the studio changes hands or is bought out, and makes it impossible.

I am saddened to see this appear on the list here. I happened to see this film on the Encore Western channel a couple of months ago and remember that it was a better than average western. But actually listening to the score (which btw was also conducted by Goldsmith) was like discovering a long lost buried treasure. I could hear a bit of what was to come in this gifted gentleman's future. Mostly reminded me stylistically of Stagecoach, but also; there were some brass and percussion passages that had my jaw dropping and reminded me so much of certain brass and percussion attacks in The Sand Pebbles (of course w/out the Asian motif or influence). Would very much be interested in any other opinions on this particular score.
I guess it still belongs to the original distributor (Columbia), and I had a feeling that it would never see the light of day. Although there is always hope that it sits in a vault somewhere waiting to be discovered (Maybe alongside Jarre's "The Professionals").

John Barry:

Walkabout: yes there is a b**t which comes from an LP made a long time ago from an abandoned album assembly. The Walkabout album, I'm told, would have beena bit like the Midnight Cowboy LP... key Barry themes mixed with the Stockhausen etc. That probably explains why there is only about 20 minutes of Barry music on the b**t. All that's known to exist now is a poor quality mono music and effects tape.

Zulu: maybe the extra cues are lost but as we're talking about maybe 3 short cues only, I think the repeatedly issued soundtrack album is OK.

Also lost:

Most of Night Games. That's about a 55 minutes score but I believe only about 25 minutes was found and paired with Game Of Death. A complete music and effects track exists but this is poor quality.

However, that's no worse than ...

White Buffalo: which also only exists as a music and effects track.

Robin And Marian (the original) is lost, I believe. Again, a m&e track exists, that's what was used for the laser disc.

The Tamarind Seed: I believe Silva Screen was able to licence it but couldn't find the tapes, same as ...

Raise The Titanic. Again, there's just an m&e track

Sinful Davy. Well, though rejected, it was fully recorded. And no one ever saw or heard it again. Unless Barry re-used the themes.

Seance On A Wet Afternoon: I could be wrong about this one, but I believe it was searched for and not found. Same goes for ...

Deadfall. Only the album master and a mono m&e track exist.

There are probably more tales of woe.

I personally think Walkabout is a particularly tragic loss. It's such a wonderful score. I know Silva re-recorded about 90% of it, but I'd still love a complete and remastered original.

Cheers
It seems that nearly the complete Columbia catalogue from the Golden Age to the Silver Age is lost.

Others:

The Satan Bug (Jerry Goldsmith)

Miss Marple series (Ron Goodwin)

Some Came Running (Elmer Bernstein) piano parts are damaged

Village and Children of the Damned (Ron Goodwin)
Seems like SOME CAME RUNNING has been rescued from oblivion after all! See the FSM web-site for details of Lukas's latest releases! Great!

steve woolston, what about David Shire and "The White Buffalo"? Did he do a score that was rejected? And if so, does it still exist?
