Since Intrada released the terrific double album of Aaron Copland's scores for "The Heiress" and "The Red Pony", It would be great if they could do a similar release for "Our Town" and "The Northern Star" (later reissued as Armored attack). I don't know if any of their original masters still exist, but I figured it doesn't hurt to suggest. |

I wonder if you're aware of the Telarc CD CELLULOID COPLAND, which contains a 17- minute suite from NORTH STAR? (The Eos Orchestra is conducted by Jonathan Sheffer.) |

Curiously it seems as though the 2009 Naxos CD of complete new recordings of OF MICE AND MEN + OUR TOWN (Bohuslav Martinu Philharmonic conducted by Andrew Mogrelia) never saw the light of day, because of problems with the Copland Estate and the music publishers. However those problems must have been resolved as this program is available as a download. This is such an important release: if Naxos won't release it in the physical format, can a specialist label fill the breach? |

"Actually Chandos is the ONLY place that sells it (that I know of), and they have been almost since its release. Almost all Naxos releases are pretty much everywhere...so who really knows what the deal is. And Chandos is of course as legit as it comes. One would assume any purchase there would go back to Naxos so it's not as if they can't know, but at the same time it's odd it's not on Spotify et al and wasn't even on Naxos's own (now closed) DL site, IIRC. Also I doubt a specialist label would, they are way too scared over CDs over 80 minutes."[/quote] I checked out the Chandos website, and they only have this as a download. As I can't find a CD listed anywhere for sale, then there's a gap in the physical format which needs to be filled. (Incidentally Naxos have licensed releases from the Delos label, so I'd imagine they'd be open to suggestion.) |

"Er, there was never a CD released in the first place. Not sure what Naxos having licenced from Delos has to do with anything." I think we are divided by a common language! Since the whole thrust of my previous comments were to bewail the unavailability of this release on CD, I can't understand your redundant remark that it can be bought off Chandos...I consider a physical object can be sold, but a download? Well I can explain to you carefully what I mean in mentioning that Naxos has licensed from other labels: I infer that they'd be likewise willing to license their releases to another label, especially if there was no physical release in the first place. Is there any significance that the program runs 80 minutes? |
