Post subject:  LOVE AND PAIN AND THE WHOLE DAMN THING by Michael Small

For those who mainly associate the composer with the "paranoid" cinema of the '70's, this lyrical score may come as a revelation. Fresh off his iconic music for KLUTE, Small was once again commissioned by director Pakula for something totally different. Sadly the score seems to have shared the fate of this marvellous movie: it's still scarcely known. While the melancholy aspects of this offbeat, bittersweet film may have seemed an ideal project for composer John Barry, Small's achievement cannot be trivialized. With the movie largely set in Spain, the composer extensively highlights the guitar and, to my ears, it's some of the most beautiful music with this instrument specially written for the cinema. The bad news is that this is a Columbia Picture, so I suspect that the music archiving may render a music-only release unlikely.
