Well, you see -- not speaking of this score's tapes -- sometimes studios would litterally throw away tapes to make room. They would also record over tapes as well to save cash.
Sometimes recording studios that housed tapes would go under and shut and the stuff would be tossed (that's right, every single film score they got) unless the composer came and claimed them.
And of course there was one overseas one that was flooded, that ended up destroying one Barry score (that we know of -- no full listof loses for that location has been given).
So, yes, they can just vanish sometimes. Also, though very rare (so far as I have read or been told), they're simply stolen. Then of course over time the person who stole them, moves and loses them; tosses them because they can't save them any longer; sells them for money; house burns down/gets flooded/hurriance; or they die and either the people who inherit it, have no idea and trash it, or there is nobody who inherits.
